This project won first prize in a competition organized annually by the steel construction organization of France – OTUA. The theme of this conceptual competition was to design the “Architecture Building” (maison de l’architecture) of a city. The project “passageXPO” is located in the 19th district of Paris, in the north-east of the city. This district is a former industrial zone that has been rapidly transformed over the past 30 years into a residential area with important public facilities such as the Cite des Sciences, Parc de la Villette and the Parc des Buttes Chaumont.

The 700 m² project provides the public a bridge-building that is designed to showcase architectural culture. In the edifice, there is a linear exhibition space, auditorium, library, and cafeteria. All of this is positioned at the intersection of two major urban focal points: the Canal de l’Ourcq and the old round-city railway – La Petite Ceinture. The old railway bridge and the water of the canal are the heart of the project. While people pass through the building, over the canal, they experience the space changing along the path as the old and new architecture is combined and transformed. In several spots, the building frames the city so it serves as a permanent exhibition in the building.

Sustainable thinking is at the heart of the project: the use of the river water for climate control, sun light control via vegetation and building orientation, the use of photovoltaic cells on the roof panels and more.
